Using the term Man Down for the motion detection feature in a lone worker system no longer seems appropriate. ### The Man Down Feature The Man Down (Worker Down) function notifies a workers monitor if there has been no movement within a set amount of time. If no movement is detected the workers phone will sound an alarm alerting them that there has been no movement. If this alert is not responded to it will be escalated to their allocated monitor and they will contact the lone worker. If there continues to be no response, then the escalation procedure will be followed to ensure the lone worker is reached. ### Women in the Workforce The estimated employment rate in The U.K for December 2018 to February 2019 shows 32.72 million people aged 16 years and over in employment, 457,000 more than the previous year. Out of the 32.72 million workers in the U.K it is estimated that 8 million, 22% of the working population, are lone workers. 15.3 million women aged 16 and over were in employment in October-December 2018. The female employment rate was 71.4%, which is the highest it has been since comparable records began in 1971. The male employment rate was 80.3%. The most common sectors of employment for women are health and social work (accounting for 21% of all jobs held by women at September 2018), wholesale and retail (14%) and education (12%). 79% of jobs in the health and social work sector and 70% of jobs in the education sector were held by women. For men, the most common sectors of employment also included the wholesale and retail trade (14% of all jobs held by men), followed by manufacturing and construction (both 11%) . Not only Man Down It is clear from the figures above that more and more women are entering the workforce, not just each year, but every quarter. They are also becoming more prevalent in previously male dominated industries. Sectors where the number of female workers are increasing include construction (14%), transportation and storage (23%) and manufacturing (25%) . Using the inclusive term Worker Down does not detract from the fact that someone is injured or failing to respond, but it does represent ALL the workforce who could be injured. Changing the name of a feature to Worker Down is a small change to make, but it will go a long way towards making workers feel more valued and included. All other features such as man down, high-risk check ins, messaging, location settings are accessible through a drop down menu. Beyond this, the app looks so basic that you don't really want to trust your team with it. Our app does not apply to tasks we are used for shifts, which are very customizable. The app can be set to have regular check ins from every 5 minutes up to 24 hours depending on the individual workers needs. You can even choose not to have check ins other than starting and ending a shift. This is also not true. Our app has multiple ways to discreetly call for help. If workers are using an iPhone they can set up multiple taps to the back to request help immediately. If they are using an Android phone they can use the shake for help feature. We also have a desktop app that can be set up on the taskbar and discreetly activated without alerting people in the surrounding area. Creating dozens or even hundreds of identical one-hour shifts writes off any chance of analysing or even sorting through your staffs work at a later date. Again this is completely incorrect. As stated above the shift length and check-in frequency is decided by the monitor and is not restricted to one hour. In fact, in our documentation, we suggest checking in every two hours if the work is not high-risk. Workers shifts and actions throughout a shift are visible on our dashboard. As to being able to sort through your staffs work later the app is designed to be used for lone worker safety, not for tracking employee productivity. Beyond these worries, OK Alone is not accredited to BS8484. This should be taken very seriously as BS8484 is the UK standard for lone worker safety platforms and marks a company out as meeting (or not meeting) the challenges of lone worker safety. It is not a legal requirement to have BS8484. The standard is also now able to be self-assessed and certified so its authority is now somewhat diminished. Man down (worker down) app systems are calibrated with detection algorithms to automatically detect movement or a lack of movement. This alarm allows the worker to check in and verify they are fine. If the worker does not respond to the alarm, then an alert is sent to their supervisor saying there has been no movement. ### How to use Man Down on your Android Smartphone Man down is set up by the worker on their smart phone. To turn it on and choose the movement time, go to the menu and choose settings. Man down settings are now available for Android smartphones. Once in the settings, the lone worker can choose to turn on man down and choose the time between movements. For example, this lone worker has chosen 5 minutes. Once turned on, if they do not move within 5 minutes the app will send notifications to check they are ok. This lone worker has man down running. The phone monitors their location and if they don't move within 5 minutes the app will try to alert the worker. If the phone cannot detect any movement it will try to alert the worker and request they confirm that they are ok. Checking with the worker first before alerting supervisors will eliminate false alarms. This worker has not moved within 2 minutes, so the man down app wants to check they are ok. If the worker keeps moving, then no alert will ever go off. However, if they fail to move, perhaps due to loss of consciousness, and do not respond to notifications then their monitor will be alerted. Once the grace period or monitor alert delay has expired an alert will be sent out to all monitors and the live monitoring call centre is activated for the account. The worker should be contacted and the escalation procedure should be followed to resolve the issue and make sure the worker is safe. If, like me, you are a lone worker who works from home, you might not be as active throughout your day as you could be. If you are lone working in an office or in a lab you spend the majority of your time sat either looking at a computer screen or lab equipment. The man down app feature has been designed to detect lack of movement, and when I am working at my desk, I have to remember to nudge my phone every now and then to let it know Im all right. Home Working is definitely here to stay In the last two years there has been the biggest change to the way people work since World War Two. The Covid-19 pandemic rapidly pushed through working from home (WFH) and people are not willing to give up their new flexibility to return to an office. Many companies have accepted this new way of working and are now advertising positions as WFH or a hybrid of home and office time. This means that many people are now working in locations away from their colleagues in environments that were not designed to be office spaces. Working from home with doting dog.
